Rat Terrier

History: The Rat Terrier shares a common ancestry as many working terriers during the 1800's originated from a mixture of crosses by early immigrants of this country using old time Fox Terriers, the Old English White Terrier, Manchester Terrier and Black and Tan Terrier, Bull Terrier, Pit Bull Terrier along with some Pointer and hunting types. During the 1910s and 1920s this type of terrier was very common in the American Midwest. As Jack rabbits began to plague crops in the Midwest. More and More Farmers began to rely on terriers and to increase the speed and versatility of them they began breeding them to Whippets and Italian Greyhounds. Around that same time Farmers in Central and Southern regions bred their Terriers to Beagles and Feist's to bring out a stronger prey and pack drive. These crosses gave the breed more speed and a better hunting nose and began what was a melting pot for what is the Rat Terrier. Temperament:
