Patterdale Terrier
Pictured Above: Skittles owned by Dave Heil General:
The Patterdale Terrier is a tough, robust working dog and appears thicker than
most Terriers. Its small size is a reverse scale of measure for its tenacity and
gameness. Scars from working should not be penalized and should be considered a
badge of honor. Origin: Lakes Region of Northern England.
History: The breed has an historical background dating back a hundred years in the Lakes Region of Northern England. These small terriers are used primarily for ground dwelling vermin. In the USA, some have been used for wild boar and raccoon as an addition to the traditional earth quarry. Temperament: The Patterdale is a very driven and game terrier. It has been said that on the hunt they will not rest. They do not make a good home pet as they would be seen "swinging from your curtains" as they require a working job.
Size: 10-13 inches tall with the weight being proportionate to size. Today's Uses: The Patterdale is used widely as a hunting terrier. Some have had great careers as a weight puller far be it from the traditionalist who feel the Patterdale is only at home working in the borough of game animals.
