Newfoundland Pictured Above: General: The Newfoundland is a sweet-disposition dog
that acts neither dull nor ill-tempered. He is a devoted companion. A
multipurpose dog, at home on land and in water, the Newfoundland is capable of
draft work and possesses natural lifesaving abilities. The Newfoundland is a
large, heavily coated, well balanced dog that is deep-bodied, heavily boned,
muscular, and strong. Origin: Newfoundland, Canada.
History: Originated in Newfoundland and that his ancestors were without a doubt brought there by fishermen from Europe. Many old prints of Newfoundland's show apparent evidence of a Husky ancestor, while other traits can be traced to other breeds. At any rate, a dog evolved which was particularly suited to the island of his origin. He is a large dog, with size and strength to perform the tasks required of him. He has a heavy coat to protect him from the long winters and the icy waters surrounding his native island. His feet were large, strong, and webbed so that he might travel easily over marshes and shores. Admired for his physical powers and attractive disposition, he was taken to England where he was extensively bred. Today most Newfoundland's are descended from forebears born in England. Temperament: Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed.
Size: 100-150 pounds. Today's Uses: a dog as much at home in the water as on dry land. Canine literature gives us stories of brave Newfoundland's which have rescued men and women from watery graves; stories of shipwrecks made less terrible by dogs which carried life lines to stricken vessels; of children who have fallen into deep water and have been brought safely ashore by Newfoundland's. Many are excellent pets and are big determined and strong enough to make a formidable weight puller.
