Pictured Above: General: The Boxer is a medium sized, sturdy, smooth-haired dog of short square figure and strong limb. The muscle is powerful and clean and should stand out prominently. The Boxer must never be plump or heavy or it would take away from its duties as a service canine. The Boxer has retained much of its abilities of strength, gameness and fearlessness from it ancestors but is more stylish and refined. Equipped for great speed but also built for power it should not appear racy. When judging the overall look of a Boxer it should appear strong but elegant. Special attention should be devoted to the head also The Muzzle should be broad and the upper jaw should have a slight taper. Origin: Germany History: The Boxer originally started the fight with its forepaws as a real Boxer of the ring. The Boxer is a refined and show polished version of the Old Bullenbeisser of Germany that was frequent of baiting rings as early as the 1700's. His most likely ancestors are the Bullenbeisser, Brabanter, Great Dane, Olde English Bulldogge and most definitely some terrier. The Boxer first became known for the early show ring of the 1900's and did not receive much notoriety until WWII when it was used as a service dog. Temperament: The Boxer is an active and courageous guardian with alert behavior. Size: 50-75 pounds Today's Uses: The Boxer is most common as a show dog but is a fantastic worker. The Boxer excels in ring and protection sports as well as obedience and agility. Some Boxers have been used for Weight Pull.
