Bernese Mountain Dog Pictured Above: General: The Bernese is and has always made a good farm dog and is a prized dog for carting. Unfortunately the Bernese Mountain Dog was brought back through a small number of breeding stock. During the 1930's many breeders bred for size and guarding instinct causing a barrage of unstable and genetically unhealthy dogs. Dedicated breeders in the last 20 years have done great work in restoring the Bernese to better physical standards and a more reliable guardian temperament. Origin: Berne region of Switzerland. < > History: The Bernese had almost disappeared in the late 1800's, when breeder Franz Scherteneib was investigating the history of these dogs found many quality dogs in the Berne region of Switzerland. Prior to that period it is belived as with many mastiff's that they developed from Roman war dogs brought to Switzerland. Temperament: The Bernese still has some lines with a tendency for unprovoked aggression, but overall they make a good farm and home guard.
Size: 85 - 90lbs Today's Uses: The Bernese is still used by many in its antique manner as a carting dog. There are many in the show ring circuit that have also made great cart pulling dogs. The Bernese has been used by some in weight pulling, with its natural build and strength a good trainer can expect a quality puller from a Bernese Mountain Dog.
