Australian Cattle Dog

Pictured Above:

General: The general appearance is that of a strong compact well built working dog, with the ability and willingness the cattle dog will carry out any task no matter how hard or dangerous. Its combination of substance, power, balance and hard muscular condition must show the ability of great agility, power and endurance.

Origin: Australian Outback

History: Developed by the Australian Cattlemen needing a dog with special abilities to drive the livestock to market. Imported dog were not capable and Dingo's were just to wild to employ. For 60 years the Cattlemen crossed and crisscrossed various breeds in what resulted The Australian Cattle Dog.  Using Bull Terrier, Dalmatian, Kelpie and Dingo along with Blue Merle Collie the cattlemen created this silent, nipping but not distressing cattle herder. The Cattle dog is so versatile it can work cattle, goats and even duck with skill.

Temperament: Loyalty and protective instincts make it a self-appointed guard to the Rancher, his herd and property. Naturally suspicious of strangers without fear but accepting of Friends. Any bad temperament or faulty structure to a working dog must be regarded as a very serious fault. Those who breed the Cattle dog take their breed very serious and know the integrity in keeping them the working dog they are today. As the name implies the dog's prime function is the control and movement of cattle in both wide open and confined areas. Always alert, extremely intelligent, watchful, courageous and highly devoted to duty making it an ideal dog.

Size: 30-45 lbs a small but powerful dog.

Today's Uses: Toady you still find the Cattle dog  doing its original work as cattle herder. Many are used in the sport of weight pull and are devoted family pets.
