American Staffordshire Terrier

Pictured Above: Jester Owned by Holly Richmond

General: The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful. He should be stocky, not long-legged or racy in outline. Am Staffs have great physical and mental characteristics that make them excellent partners for responsible, active and caring owners. Am Staffs are very responsive to training and eager to please. It is strongly recommended to take them to obedience classes at a young age. Well behaved and obedient Am Staffs are great ambassadors for the breed and contribute to improve its reputation.

Origin: American Staffordshire Terriers can originally be traced to the original pit dogs of Europe. Though bred for show are heavier and thicker than their "pit" ancestors.

History:  The Am Staff is first cousin to the old Stafford pit dogs of England. When breeding in the US became common the fanciers started to breed the Am Stafford's to be larger and heavier. Through years of development the two staffs grew apart and the AKC first recognized the American Staffordshire Terrier as a separate breed in 1936.

Temperament: Remember that American Staffordshire Terriers are very strong, energetic, agile and powerful dogs. They also are very resourceful, and "determination" is one of their most notable traits. Whether destroying your new couch when left home alone, or climbing into your lap and shower you with kisses! They don't give up to easily. Am Staffs are very adaptable and will even do well in urban living provided they have enough exercise or other positive outlets for their energy. Many Am Staffs are easy going couch potatoes but can also be quite rambunctious until they mature. Maturity can come pretty late 2 to 3 years old in some cases. Am Staffs remain playful and have a great sense of humor.

Size: American Staffordshire Terriers range from 50-90 pounds

Today's Uses:  Many Am Staffs are bred for show but many are workers. They excel in Agility, Weight pull, fly ball and protection.
