American Bulldog

Pictured Above: Swoopin Scooby Owned by Jerry Liest

General: The American Bulldog is descended from the original working English Bulldog brought to the United States during colonial times. Other breeds were added to make the American Bulldog larger, longer legged and longer muzzled than his English forbears, but essentially this dog is the truest representation of the first Bulldogs of England.

Origin: American Bulldogs supposedly can originally be traced to the original bull bating dogs of England.

History: Working American Bulldogs were created in blood sport in Old England, where they battled bears, bulls and even lions. American Bulldogs are used today for weight pull, protection and to catch wild boar. Because they are still used in a working manner, American bulldogs are a modern representation of the extinct working British bulldog.

Temperament: Generally are good with kids and are fine family dogs some American Bulldogs have strong working drives combined with great size and should not be owned by a novice. This breed can be aggressive to humans or other animals.

Size:  American Bulldogs range from 60 pounds to 125 pounds. They are short haired, heavy boned and muscular. They come in two breed types, Johnson and Performance (Bully or Standard). The first type is larger and heavier with a shorter muzzle and loose skin. The second type is more athletic with tighter skin and a longer muzzle. Johnson and Performance American Bulldog's are often crossed to create an intermediate type, which is called the Hybrid type and is just as popular as the other two types.

Today's Uses: American Bulldogs are used as family guard dogs, competitive weight pull dogs, protection dogs and as catch dogs for large wild game. Some Farms and Ranches still employ American Bulldogs across the United States today.
