Poodle

Pictured Above: Jib Owned by Suzi Cope

General: Poodles, Poodles Poodles. Poodles like people. Poodles like water. Poodles are tall. Poodles are small. Poodles for Hunting and Poodles for Tea. Poodles are smart great family dogs for a family who likes to have a pretty yet balanced dog. Poodles are also hypo allergenic making them great companions for those with allergies.

Origin: France.

History: The Poodle was developed in ancient France where is was a marvelous hunter and retriever of Duck and other water Birds. The French worshiped its great sense of smell and outstanding intelligence. These attributes were used traditionally and revered as it allowed the Poodle to collect game in the dark. French trade routes spread this dogs blood throughout Europe and can be found in many different types of retrieving dogs. The Standard and Miniature Poodles have well retained their working traits allowing them to achieve titles in many of today's canine sports. The Miniature Poodle is simply a smaller still capable in size for retrieving yet in a smaller size making it a great family dog. The Toy is a type tried for many centuries with small Miniatures but many pups were feeble or grotesque looking. In the 20th much greater attempts were made and the Toy has become more accepted but due to its size does not make a formidable dog for retrieving but a great pet and still retains the Poodles admiration for water.

Temperament: The Standard Poodle is a Noble and confident dog. The Miniature Poodle is lively and obedient. The Toy Poodle is very gregarious but can be ill mannered if spoiled to much.

Size:  Standard Poodle - Over 15" Miniature Poodle - 10-15" Toy Poodle - Under 10".

Today's Uses: Most Poodles are pets. Some Fanciers do a fine job acquiring working titles with their Poodles.
