Labrador Retriever

Pictured Above:

General: A Devoted and Intelligent dog the Labrador is one of the most widely spread and common dogs in the world. The Labrador Retriever is Water loving, outgoing, keen, intelligent and family oriented. This makes the Labrador one of the worlds greatest family dogs. There is not much the Lab cant do whether Retrieving Duck, assisting the handicapped, searching for lost victims, finding bombs, Water long jumping, Weight Pull, agility or just being some kids buddy the Labrador can find a way to excel at whatever its doing. The Labrador comes in 3 color variants, Black, Chocolate and Yellow. All Labs have a love of the water that is just plain hard wired into them.

Origin: Newfoundland Canada.

History: The Labrador Retriever can trace its history to the St. John's region of Newfoundland Canada. Where it was know as the "small water dog" or St. Johns Water Dog to differentiate it from the much Larger Newfoundland. The dogs of St. Johns were basically taxed out of existence. these dogs had thankfully been transported to England in Greenland county where it was likely used by local fisherman to bring ropes and nets ashore. The county of Greenland once named Labrador was visited by the Earl of Malmesbury who when seen these Otter Tailed Water loving dogs referred to them as Labradors was written in a letter and was formally adopted to refer to the breed. While being taxed out of existence in Canada the dogs flourished in Britain where it was not only used by fisherman but also became refined by local land owners for use as a gun dog. Since then the Labrador has also become one of the best seeing eye dogs and has also competed in almost every known sport for dogs from Dock Jumping to Weight Pulling.

Temperament: Loyal and dependable the Labrador Retriever is one of the worlds finest family dogs. A great working dog in many aspects with its eager to please attitude combined with its intelligence and sensitivity. However with its popularity a future owner has to be smart in choosing as some have been poorly bred having problems of cataracts, arthritis and ill temperament.

Size: 55-75lbs.

Today's Uses: The Labrador has come a long way from just being the fisherman's dog. Today you can find the Lab doing everything from Assistance, Police, search and rescue, retrieving game, water sports like Dock Jumping and weight pull. I would bet that if one searched hard enough they could even find a sky diving Labrador Retriever. The Lab is one of the worlds most well rounded dogs.
