Japanese Akita
Pictured Above: "" Owned by General: The Akita is a proud and independent breed. The Akita can be somewhat aloof and is usually misunderstood as a lack of loyalty. However the Akita like to roam and hunt on its own wits. The Akita is an Impressive large and powerful dog. Some can be quite even tempered but many are truly meant to be handled by a dominant owner who is not a novice. The Akita can be a very protective dog. Origin: Japan. < > History: The Akita has been said for generations to be "an ancient Japanese breed developed for Hunting large game". We truly believe if you study the history of the Tosa Inu you will too reach the conclusion this is all B.S. and nothing more than a modern day myth. The Akita was developed along the coarse of the of the Tosa Inu project. After WWII the Japanese working to create a large fighting dog with European Mastiffs and Bulldogs and a percentage of blood from the Ainu dog. The Akita was a spinoff of dogs that were predominately crosses of European Mastiff to the Ainu. These dogs did not posses the right requirements in what the Japanese wanted from their fighting dogs. A story was created and many of these unwanted dogs we passed off to American G.I.'s as an ancient large game hunting breed. Many military men brought these dogs back home and the Japanese Akita with its many wonderful stories was born. Temperament: The Akita is Aloof and can be human and dog aggressive it is recommended that the Akita only be owned by experience dog handlers.
Size: 70 to 125 pounds Today's Uses: Due to its size and strength the Japanese Akita could be a good weight pull dog. Unfortunately due to his aloofness and strong will the Akita will be a challenge for any handler.
